The Powder Coated Marine Grade Aluminum Rail Base has a 1.0 inch diameter Rubber Ball designed to sit at right angles to the rail. The Stainless Steel U-Bolt and nuts included will fit a circular post or handlebar with diameter from 3/4 to 1 inches.  The U-Bolt is not rust proof.  If it will be exposed to the elements I recommend the RAM-B-231U.  Weight: 2.8 oz (79 g)

Ideal for motorcycle handlebars, the RAM-B-231ZU consists of a 1" B size rubber ball attached to a zinc-coated metal U-bolt base. Designed to sit at right angles to the mounting rail, the U-bolt base accommodates rails from .5" to 1.25" in diameter. Included are black cover caps to be placed over the exposed ends of the U-bolt as well as a composite adapter that can narrow the rail to a minimum width of .5".

Q: Do I need to use the plastic shim when installing this base?
A: No, the shim is just there in case your handlebar is too narrow for the U-Bolt to get a good grip. If the U-Bolt fits well without the shim there is no reason to use it.
