Overview
Of course, this is also a book about the legendary dragonflies and the other types of glass wings, their origins and development, their numerous optimizations and their successes. But it's a lot more than that.
Wolfgang Binz has meticulously researched how the GfK pioneers Eugen and Ursula Hänle began, how the Glasflügel company emerged from the slipway in the kitchen-living room, and which companions and competitors accompanied the Hänles. He also tells of the countless hurdles that had to be overcome and problems that were never lacking. And after Eugen Hänle's tragic death at the latest, the story even becomes an economic drama that could hardly be imagined. After reading this book, the glider pilots will have a different impression of Eugen Hänle and Glasflügel than before.
The rescue attempts and the preservation of the legacy of Glasflügel by Hanko and Christian Streifeneder are also described.
Almost five hundred photos, documents and drawings (including numerous large-format three-sided views) turn a specialist book into a feast for the eyes and a treasure trove for glider pilots and model builders. It's good that it is finally available. You can of course also have it as a gift ...
Review by Paul Remde
I'm an engineer/MBA who loves reading about the development of sailplanes and the people who brought them to life. Certainly the Glasflügel sailplanes are some of the most interesting and innovative sailplanes ever made. The book is expertly published by Klaus Fey of EQIP - maker of the fantastic "Sailplanes" books. Everyone who loves Glasflügel sailplanes will love this book.
