Glide Navigator II Revision History

Overview
This page contains historical data in regard to previous software revisions of Glide Navigator II.  Versions are released in increasing order.  Version 2.0 was released after version 1.0, etc.  The Beta versions are candidates for future released versions so they come before the actual release.  For example, Version 2.0 was followed by Version 2.1 Beta 1, Beta 2, etc., and eventually the released Version 2.1.

Version 3.00
January 31, 2008
The only software change to this new version is that the password scheme has changed.  The licensing strategy has also changed.  If you do not feel that the new password feature is important to you, you do not need to upgrade.  If you already own a license to GN II you can upgrade to version 3.0 by purchasing a new password.

• Password Tied to Pilot Name
  In all previous versions of Glide Navigator II, the password was tied to either a PDA or GPS serial number.  That was a very secure way for use to limit the pirating of the software.  However, it was often a problem for pilots because when a PDA or GPS died you couldn't get a new PDA or GPS up and running with GN II until a new password was purchased.  That was especially frustrating when at a soaring contest - or when about to take-off on any soaring adventure.  Starting in version 3.0 the password is tied to the pilot's name.  When ordering the customer enters the "Pilot Name" (such as "Paul Remde") instead of a PDA or GPS serial number.  That is much easier than trying to find the GPS serial number or the correct PDA serial number.  The Pilot Name is then used to generate a unique 8-character password.  The user then enters both the Pilot Name and the password into GN II.  GN II will not connect to a GPS until a matching Pilot Name and password are entered into GN II.  The pilot name is displayed when GN II is started.  Since the password is tied to the pilot's name only, it will work with any GPS or PDA so you won't need a new password when you upgrade your PDA or GPS in the future.  This new password scheme makes it easier to use a pirated name and password combination, but we are hoping that glider pilots will appreciate our efforts and purchase a license.
• Licensing Changes for Syndicates
  In the past GN II was licensed to either a person on a glider.  Syndicates that own a glider could get multiple licenses for multiple PDAs owned by multiple syndicate members.  That is no longer the case.  All new purchases will be tied to the pilot.  Syndicates with multiple PDAs owned by multiple pilots will all need to buy licenses tied to each pilot name.  All syndicates that purchased a license for earlier versions of GN II can get passwords for their syndicate members by purchasing a new password for each pilot.
• Licensing Changes for License Transfers
  All new purchases will be for a specific pilot.  They cannot be transferred to anyone else - ever.  If you sell PDA, please enter a bad password into GN II.
• Lower Price for a New License
  The price for a new license for GN II has been lowered from $149 to $95.  This was done because no major new features have been added in several years.  We are not actively working on new features for the product.  When new features are released in a new version we will probably increase the price.
• Higher Price for New Passwords
  If you want to use version 3.0 you will need to purchase a new password for $20.  If you do not feel that the new password feature is important to you, you do not need to upgrade.

• Updates for Competitors in World Soaring Competition
  This update probably only applies to pilots flying in the world soaring competition.  It allows 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 Km turn area radii and counts by 5 above 5 Km.

• Waypoint file error bomb fix
  Certain errors in waypoint and airspace files would cause the software to lock-up while displaying "loading files" or something similar.  This fixes some of the causes of that problem, but probably not all.  The problem is ultimately with the waypoint and airspace files, but ideally GN II should not crash when finding an error. If you run into this problem please e-mail your waypoint and airspace files to me.

This version fixes a number of bugs and adds a few new features.  Unfortunately, we don't have an exact list of changes because changes were made as requested over a period of time.  Below are a few items that have changed.  Let us know if you find any other changes or bug fixes that we should document.

• Support for US Contest Rule Changes
  Turn Area Tasks (Assigned Area Tasks) now support a maximum area radius of 30 statute miles.
  Turn Area Tasks (Assigned Area Tasks) support of to 8 turnpoints.
  Standard Tasks such as "Assigned Tasks" and "Modified Assigned Tasks" support up to 14 turnpoints.
• Improved "PDA Logger"
  Flight logs generated by Glide Navigator II as you fly and saved on a memory card now have an improved header file which makes it easier to view the files in SeeYou and StrePla.  Glide Navigator II still does not allow you to enter a Pilot Name or Glider Type into the software so you will need to edit those data fields in the IGC file manually.  Note: This relates only to flight logs generated by GN II as you fly.  It does not relate to flight logs downloaded from external GPS flight recorders.
• Airspace File Altitudes
  SUA altitudes in the SUA files can be AMSL as well as ALT and MSL.

This version fixes a number of bugs and adds a few new features.

• Volkslogger serial number support
  A customer reported that the password that was created for his Volkslogger serial number was not working.  This version should fix that problem so that Glide Navigator II will report the Volkslogger serial number in the "Bad Password" error window and accept a valid password.
• Option to disable panning
  Some customers want to be able to disable panning on the map screen.  That is now possible.  Go to the Map Orientation screen to disable it.
• GPS Altitude Data Lost Warnings
  Since many pilots are using GPS altitude for final glide calculations Glide Navigator II now displays warnings if altitude data becomes unavailable due to bad antenna positioning or satellite locations.
• Support for LX Navigation Colibri, LX20 GPS Flight Recorders and LX5000 and LX7000 flight computers
  Glide Navigator II can now accept pressure altitude from these devices.  Passwords for Glide Navigator II can also be tied to their serial numbers.  It may take up to a minute for Glide Navigator II to recognize those devices.  Altitudes displayed may seem odd while it is trying to recognize the devices.

This version fixes a number of bugs and adds a few new features.

• Flight Log Downloads from 302 & 302A
  Glide Navigator II can now download secure flight logs from Cambridge 302 and 302A units. 
• Pocket PC Flight Logs with IGC Filenames
  Pocket PC generated flight logs are now saved with an IGC filename.  This is a very nice feature.  In the past the filename was always the same and it would write over old flight logs if you didn't rename them.  The Pocket PC generated flight logs are flight logs that GN II creates as you fly.  It has nothing to do with flight logs downloaded from a GPS-NAV, 302 or 302A.
• Baud Rate Selection Options
  While most GPS units communicate at the NMEA 0183 specified 4800 Baud rate, a few unique GPS units communicate at non-standard baud rates.  For example, the NAVMAN GPS sleeve communicates at 57 kBaud.  GN II now supports 4800, 9600 and 57 K Baud rates.  The baud rate can be changed in Menu 5 by pressing the "Set Up Comm Port" button.
• 302A Support Repaired
  Support for Cambridge 302A units had been reduced for a time.  GN II now works great again with 302A units.
• Fixed bug that kept GN II from running on newer Pocket PCs.  It works fine now on all tested Pocket PCs.
• Fixed a bug that reported falsely that GPS-NAV flight logs were downloaded with a security failure.  They download always worked but it used to say the process failed when in fact it worked fine and produced secure files.

This version is designed to fix the problem with the exchange of the MacCready value with Cambridge 302 units.  Please help us test this.  The previous version seemed to work fine on the ground but failed to transfer the MacCready after a while in flight.  Let us know how it works.

This new version from Chip Garner has several bug fixes and 2 major new features.  This new beta version still works with your existing GN II password.

Turn Here
The first new feature is a "Turn Here" option in the task list when you are inside a Turn Area Task (AAT) turn area.  This was not implemented with a new button on the screen, but using a new option in the task list.  Selecting "Turn Here" does 2 things.  It moves the move-point to the current location and makes the next task waypoint the active waypoint.  If you change your mind and want to navigate further into the turn area you can re-select the point at which you turned.  The "Turn Here" option will then re-appear in the task list. 

Comm Port Selection
Customers with CF card or BlueTooth GPS units sometimes had trouble getting GN II to find their GPS.  In past Glide Navigator II automatically checked many comm ports in a predefined order.  That could take a long time if your GPS was on comm port 7 or 8.  Also, GN II would sometimes crash if it tried to connect to a non-existent comm port.  The crash bug has been fixed and now you can select which comm port you want GN II to check first for your GPS.  If it does not find a GPS on the user specified comm port it will try to find the GPS automatically.  Once it finds a GPS it saves the comm port in the configuration file so that it can connect quickly next time.  The comm port selection dialog box is available in Menu 5. Tip: Most GPS units that connect to the Pocket PC using a cable connected to the bottom of the Pocket PC use comm port 1.  Beyond that there is no standard.  CF card and BlueTooth GPS units can be found on comm ports 1 through 9.

Bug Fixes

• Cambridge 302 MacCready Exchange - There had been a bug such that after some period of time the exchange of MacCready from the Pocket PC to the 302 would stop working. This has been fixed.
• Pan - There had been a bug such that using the zoom arrows at the bottom of the screen and then touching the screen before the turn arrows went away would cause a random pan.  This has been fixed.
• Password issues - There had been some password issues with some Pocket PCs and Cambridge GPS-NAV units.  This has been fixed.

The previous version did not allow the user to set the "Exchange McC" and "Exch. Active WPT" checkboxes when using a Cambridge 302 or GPS-NAV.  They were accidentally removed as the menus were changed slightly.  This new version allows the checkboxes to be accessed by going to Menu 4 and pressing the "GPS Settings" button.  If you used version 2.2 beta 2 and the exchange of MacCready was not working properly, please try this version and be sure to check the "Exchange McC" checkbox.

This new version fixes bugs related to the Cambridge 302A (CFR) GPS/logger.  In the past GN was confusing the 302A for a 302 and was displaying incorrect final glide and wind information as a result.  It now works great with a 302A.  It uses the pressure altitude data from the 302A and calculates wind speed and direction while circling.  Also, in the last beta version we were not able to compile for a 1550, but that issue has been resolved so this version has been compiled for all the Pocket PC types supported in the recent past.  Customers that have tested sending task declarations to the 302 and 302A using the Beta 1 version have reported that it works great.

This new version allows Glide Navigator II to send task declarations to a Cambridge 302 or 302A. 

Unlike some past beta versions that were very solid and recommended to everyone, this new beta version has not yet been thoroughly tested. Please help us test it by sending a task declaration to your 302 or 302A and going for a flight. Then download the flight log and verify that the declaration data exactly matches the waypoints from your waypoint file. I have not been able to test it extensively yet. 

Be sure to enable task declarations in GN by going to Menu 2 and selecting the "Task Options" button and then putting a check in the "Declare Tasks On" check box.

This version features:

• This release will only be valuable to customers using "Generic GPS" units.  There had been a bug such that GN automatically switched the GPS type back to "GPS-NAV" when it connected to any GPS.  It was therefore necessary to change the GPS type to "Generic GPS" every time you connected to a GPS.  It now keeps the setting on the GPS type you select.

This version features:

• Start Cylinder Warning Bug Fixed?
• Pan distance increased?  Several customers complained that the pan was often activated when they didn't want it to be.  I think Chip increased the distance you must drag before a pan is done.
• Dickie Feakes reports from the UK that "It fixed a bug on the perpendicular start line when run on my Aero 2100."
• Support for Communication Port 8.  This allows GN to work with the Emtac/Socket/CruxII BlueTooth GPS. 
• I don't have much data yet from Chip on what other bugs have been fixed.  Please let me know if you find something that was broken and is now fixed.  I'll be doing extensive testing soon.

This version features:

• Password Bug Fixed - Version 2.1 Beta 3 didn't find the GPS serial number correctly a therefore displayed a "bad password" error.  The bug only appeared when connected to a GPS.
• Dell Axim X5 Pocket PC password support - This version fixes a bug which didn't allow GN to access the UUID serial number in some Axims.
• Data Exchange Options - The "Exchange Active Waypoint" and "Exchange MacCready" options that used to be found in the Menu 3 / Display Options / Next, are now found in Menu 4 in the "Data Exchange" dialog box.

This version features:

• Improved Dell Axim X5 Pocket PC password support.  The previous beta version didn't actually use the internal UUID (serial number) in the Dell. It used other device specific information. This version uses the first 16 characters of the UUID.  You no longer have to do the detailed procedure that was required for version 2.1 beta 2.
• Support for passwords tied to the UUID of HP iPAQ 5400 series Pocket PCs.  The UUID displayed in the Pocket PC "Asset Viewer" application is out of sequence with the number that GN can access, so it is best to run GN and enter a test password ("NOTAREAL" or anything else) so that GN can then display the UUID it is getting from the Pocket PC.

In addition to several bug fixed, the new features are listed below.

• Logging IGC files to Pocket PC internal memory - If you enable IGC file logging, Glide Navigator will now save the IGC file to internal Pocket PC memory if an SD card or CF card is not available.  Please be cautious that you do not use up all your internal memory as it will impact performance of Glide Navigator.  Eventually we will use the IGC filename format which includes the date, etc.  For now it creates a file called "FakeIGCfile".  If you want to keep the log file you will need to rename it after your flight.  Otherwise the file will be overwritten the next time you fly or run GN in Simulator mode.
• Waypoint Arrival Radius can now be set to 1 mile to support a new US contest rule.  In the past it could not be set higher than 0.5 miles.
• Support for Dell Axim Pocket PCs.  We can now generate passwords for Dell Axim Pocket PCs.  To get a password you must follow these steps:
  • Be sure to enter your name into the Owner Name field into your Pocket PC.  You can access it from Start Menu / Settings / Owner Information icon.
  • Run the Sys Info application available from the Start Menu / Settings / System tab and e-mail me the last 16 digits of the "UUID".
  • Run Glide Navigator. 
  • Go to Menu 4 and select "Change Password". 
  • Press OK with any text in the password box. It will tell you you have entered a bad password. 
  • e-mail me the "PDA SN" displayed in the "Bad Password" dialog box.
  • I will e-mail you the password for your Pocket PC.
• Support for special start arc for use in Argentina. It is available as an option in the "Start Gates" dialog box found in Menu 3.
• Removed backlight disabling.  Years ago, it was decided that the software should automatically turn off the backlight to help conserve the glider's battery.  That worked great with Compaq Aero 1500 Pocket PCs, but it is a problem with new Pocket PC which benefit from having the backlight on in flight.  If you had previously run Glide Navigator or Pocket-NAV on your Pocket PC, you will want to disable (uncheck) the Pocket PC setting labeled "Turn off backlight if device not used for X min"  That option is available on iPAQs under: Start Menu / Settings / System / Backlight / External Power
• Fixed a long time font issue on iPAQs.  In the past, a strange font was being used by WinCE that had some numbers transposed down.  It looked strange.  It has now been fixed.
• Improved how GN looks for memory cards.  In the past GN had some issues finding SD and CF flash memory cards in some Pocket PCs due to differences in how the Pocket PCs named the cards.  The software now looks for a variety of different names.  It will still have issues with Pocket PCs that refer to the memory cards in languages other than English.  Let us know if GN cannot find the memory card on your Pocket PC.

Version 2.0

This is the released version after much testing with the beta versions of 2.0.  A few minor bugs were fixed since version 2.0 Beta 8.

Note: This is not a major revision.  There is no need to download it unless you need the new features listed below.

• If the Equipment type is set to "Generic GPS", Glide Navigator reads the GPS Altitude from the GPGGA NMEA message.  That means that differential final glide can be displayed using any GPS!  To set the Equipment type, go to Menu 4 and select the "Change Equipment" button.
  Note: The GPS altitude sent from the GPS will probably go to zero if the GPS does not have a 3D position fix.  This should not be a problem as long as the antenna has a good view of the sky.  If the final glide display is set to show differential altitude, it will appear that you cannot make it to your waypoint because Glide Navigator will think you are at an altitude of 0.  It should be obvious when this occurs.
• There was a minor change to the format of the IGC file logged to the flash card.  The files generated by Glide Navigator can now be viewed in Flight Analysis.

Version 2.0 Beta 7

• Fixed an issue with new versions of the CAI 302 which caused incorrect final glide data to be displayed and ballast data to "change on it's own".  There must have been a change in the 302.  Therefore, old versions (before firmware version 2.50) of the 302 may (or may not) have issues with this new version.  This can be tested by changing the ballast setting when connected to a 302 and seeing if it changes on its own.  Let us know if you see any obviously incorrect final glide numbers when connected to your 302.
• Reads the pressure altitude from Volksloggers and uses it for glides and airspace.  Passwords can be set based on the Volkslogger serial number.  Glide Navigator does not yet support sending flight declarations to the Volkslogger.  It also cannot be used to download flight logs from the Volkslogger.  Flight Analysis can be used to download flight logs from the Volkslogger.
• Reads the pressure altitude from Zander products and uses it for glides and airspace.  Passwords can be set based on the Zander serial number.  Chip does not have a Zander so this has not been tested yet.  Please let us know if you can help us test this.  Glide Navigator does not yet support sending flight declarations to the Zander.  It also cannot be used to download flight logs from the Zander.
• Logging interval can now be changed for the IGC file logged to a flash card.

Version 2.0 Beta 5

• Improved menu navigation - You can now return to the menu after changing a parameter.  Previous versions always took you back to the main flying screen after every parameter change.  You can also use new "Prev." and "Next" buttons to move freely between the menus.
• IGC Flight Logging - This in not complete yet, but Glide Navigator II can now save a simple flight log file to a flash card.  This feature will be improved very soon.  We will be adding the date to the filename along with more header information, etc.
• Touch the North Arrow to switch from "North Up" to "Track Up".  This feature must be enabled to work.
• Beta 5 fixes a number of irritating bugs in Beta 4 in addition to the following.
• Several things are incomplete, mainly the logger support pages.
• We are now working on support for various loggers, German version and any bugs. Further down on the list are improvements to task editing, area task support, and automatic starts and finishes.
• Turn area tasks:
  • Shows little plane (North Up) on move points screen (if it is within the frame).
  • Changed area task angles such that the area is drawn clockwise from the first angle to the second. This allows areas of 180 degrees or larger to be drawn correctly. It also means you must enter the angles in the correct order.
  • On iPAQs, scrolling and moving turn area points can be done with the rocker button at the bottom middle. (Turn area points can only be moved on the Move Points page available on Show Task.) On Compaq 1500s, you can set the buttons to “Game” and use them for scrolling and moving points. Select game buttons in Q Utilities (not Q Launch).
• If you get a chance to fly this version, please try scrolling with the buttons (above). We know it is slower, but I think it may be just fast enough in the air, and it may work better than the scroll bars. This is obviously a poor solution for very long lists. Scrolling happens on the Edit Task and the Go To Waypoint pages.
• Moved Edit Task so you don’t hit it accidentally when trying to select Show Task. Show Task is selected many times per flight, Edit Task is usually needed less often. On area tasks, hitting Edit Task by mistake requires going through several pages. Pilots not using tasks will hopefully have turna rea tasks shut off, and so will only have to go through one page if the inadvertently hit Edit Task.
• Changed the bug polar. The number is the percent L/D at best L/D. Thus 90 will reduce the L/D at best L/D speed by 10%. This is done by increasing the A coefficient to model a parasitic drag increase. The best L/D speed drops, and the best L/D at this speed is slightly better than the 90% best L/D achieved at the previous best L/D speed. The result is a lower optimum speed to fly for the current ballast and MC settings, and a worse glide ratio.
• Added a Start gate maximum altitude warning. The time entry is for a timer which will start when you drop back below the gate altitude. This is not yet implemented.
• START ALT WARNING - The bar that shows up along the top of the screen when the start altitude is near violation. It now only comes up before the start and when near the altitude, and it is easier to shut off the gate altitude warning under Start Gates.
• The PAN was changed so that you have to drag your finger farther before it is activated to prevent accidental panning.
• MARK POINT – Added a yes/no dialog so you can cancel out of it.
• SUAs use polygons to approximate circles and arcs. The polygon was inscribed in the circle, so there was a potential for being inside (by a small amount) when GN II showed you outside. SUA circles and arcs are now excribed so you can’t be in when shown out of SUAs. (Unfortunately I do not know the antonym for inscribe so I have made one up.) Start gates and task areas are still inscribed. The arc gate is excribed.
• Fixed the fiinal glide arrival margin going down in 99 ft increments.
• Added a Day maximum altitude warning because most areas and contests do not allow gliders above a certain altitude. (Usually you can’t reach the altitude.)
• Fixed this bug: If both US start gate and turn area task are on the first area is not deleted on re-editing a task. There are two copies, or two different areas, of the first prescribed area in the task.
• Fixed auto zoom problems. Auto zoom now turns off for 30 seconds if the pilot changes the zoom level manually.
• Fixed automatic zooming too far when using north up.
• Fixed log to card, can shut it on and off.

Changes from version 1.1 to 1.11
There is no pressing need to upgrade to version 1.11 if you are currently using version 1.1.  The only change is related to opening special European airspace files created by Hans Trautenberg.  Version 1.1 could open some old SUA files created by Hans.  This was an oversight.  Version 1.11 does not allow access to Hans' files.  If you would like us to add that functionality back into Glide Navigator, please let us know.  We will have to charge license fees for file access to support Hans' work on the files.

Bugs fixed in version 1.1
The only change from the beta version is that the 30 nautical mile zoom level now works.  This only worked in statute miles in version 1.1 beta. There is no reason to change from the beta version to this version for pilots who are not using nautical miles as the distance unit - except that you may get satisfaction from knowing that you are running the most recent version.

Bugs fixed in version 1.1 Beta (also fixed in version 1.1)

• At startup it was navigating to a point at 0,0 rather than the home airport. If you tried to navigate to the home airport, you couldn't
• After moving TAT turnpoints the pan was left in an incorrect location so when you went back to the main flying screen the glider was not at the bottom of the screen.
• It also wasn't showing all the rings around the MSP Class B airport - I think due to the order they were drawn.

New Features Available in Glide Navigator II Version 1.0  - (Not available in Pocket-NAV 5.0)

• iPAQ 3800 and 3900 Series Pocket PC's Now Supported
• Reachable Waypoints Highlighted
  Waypoints which are designated as landable in the data base (L or A attribute) and that are reachable at the current MacCready, wind and altitude margin settings are highlighted on the moving map. Touch any waypoint to display the altitude needed and the distance, as well as other waypoint information.
• Turnpoint Area Task support has been improved
  Glide Navigator now has the best support for Turnpoint Area Tasks on the market.  When you setup a TAT task and go to the Show Task screen, you can now move the task points within the turnpoint area circle. Just click on the button on the bottom of the Show Task screen labeled "Move Pt". You will then see the area and a display of the Estimated Total Time calculated using the number shown in the Estimated Speed box on the Show Task screen. You can move the task turnpoints by dragging anywhere on the screen with your finger, or with the rocker joystick on iPAQ's. On a 1550 you could use the 4 buttons on the front of the 1550 if you enable them as Game Buttons, but I'm not sure I'd recommend that. These new features are very cool, and invaluable in US competitions which now use the TAT tasks often.  Areas are keyed on the distance units selected; if kilometers are selected pie wedge areas can be defined, if miles or nautical miles are selected only circular areas in miles can be defined (as per US contest rules). Turn areas are saved and displayed if you re-enter Edit Task (this was not the case on some Pocket-NAV versions).
• Mark Point
  There is a new Mark button on the GPS Info. screen.  Touching the button adds the current position to the waypoint list, making it available for navigation. Perfect for marking thermals or wave lift for later reference.  The point is not saved in a file.
• Configurable Displays
  A screen has been added under Configure, More Configure, Preferences, More that allows showing bearing, track, netto, differential wind and/or numeric wind direction on the main flying screen.
• Two Way Communications with Cambridge Aero Instruments' Products
  Full two way communications are supported with the Cambridge 302 , GPS-NAV and L-NAV. Your GPS-NAV version must be 6.0 or higher for two-way communications. GPS-NAV activation is not necessary.
• More Track Display Options
  Tracks can be off, 300, 2000 or 5000 tracks. Tracks are put down as data is logged, so 300 points at a one second interval is five minutes. Tacks can be erased and started over at any time. Too many tracks can slow down the 1500 series Compaqs.

  10 tasks (A - J) are now supported.
• New Zoom Level
  A zoom level of 30 miles has been added.
• Configuration Data Saved to Flash Card
  All configuration data is now saved in a file, with a copy on the flash card if present. If the "config.dat" file is not found in memory, the flash card is searched. This prevents having to re-enter user data; units, display preferences, turnpoint radius etc. if the batteries die.

Known Issues

• There are a few new buttons which are "grayed out" and can not be selected because the features have not been implemented yet.
