High Efficiency Dual Power Conversion Unit and GPS Data Splitter, 5 V
This is a nice two-seat glider data splitter and power converter.  This device is perfect for owners of 2-seat gliders who want to connect 2 Pocket PCs to a single GPS.  It takes 12 VDC power from your glider battery and provides 5V power to 2 Pocket PCs.  There is no power load on the 302 or GPS-NAV 5V power supply at all.  Data from the GPS is routed to both Pocket PCs.  Data sent from each pocket PC is sent to the GPS.

Data Collisions
If both Pocket PCs transmit data to the GPS at the same time, the GPS will receive bad data and ignore it.

Glide Navigator II Start-up
If you are using Glide Navigator II (or Pocket-NAV), you will need to start the programs one at a time, allowing them each to establish communication with the GPS while the other unit is not talking.  Otherwise, the program will enter simulator mode if no communication to the 302 or GPS-NAV is established successfully at the beginning.

The unit has 3 9-pin connectors.

  • DB-9m for connection to the GPS (Cambridge GPS-NAV, 302, 302A, or any other GPS).  Pins 2 & 3 are for GPS data transmit and receive.  Pin 5 is for common (ground).
  • 2 DB-9f connectors for 2 Pocket PCs.  The connections are the same as the connectors on a Cambridge GPS-NAV, 302, 302A or the Goddard PS-5a.

Goddard I38C-x or I38C-3 cables can be used to connect to current model iPAQs. Cumulus iPAQ cradles also connect directly to the SPS-1.  Other cables are available for other Pocket PCs.

Goddard PC-x cable can be used to connect the splitter to a Cambridge GPS-NAV or 302.

Electrical Noise Suppression
Electrical Noise can be a problem with low cost switching power converters.  The Goddard PS-5a has been very popular and I've never had any complaints about electrical noise from the PS-5a interfering with the aircraft radio. Below is a list of techniques used in the PS-5a to minimize electrical noise:

  • Internal ferrite shielding on both power and ground lines coming into the unit.
  • Capacitive filtering on the power lines
  • RFI/EMI filtered DB-9 connectors
  • Ground and power planes on the printed circuit board

Efficiently converts 12 VDC input to 5 VDC output for Pocket PC's. Compatibility with a complete line of cables allows the device to be used with a wide variety of Pocket PC's, GPS's, flight computers, flight loggers, etc.  The unique modular design allows easy upgrades in the future.  Upgrading your Pocket PC or logger will require the purchase of only one new cable.
