Overview
I offer more than just soaring instruments, books and software.  I have become an expert at using many soaring instrument and software products.  I often help customers install their soaring software on their PC or PDA.  I also have customers send their PDAs and PNAs to me so that I can install soaring software, waypoints, airspace, maps, etc. on their device for them.  In addition, I now offer barograph and flight recorder calibrations and can reset the electronic security seal on flight recorders that have become "un-sealed".

Support-Phone Support Over the Phone or Web With Free Web Conferencing - One-on-one - Very Popular

Accelerate your learning curve!  Get up-to-speed on your new soaring software or instrument in an hour or 2 - with help from an expert.

I offer training over the phone on the soaring software topics listed below for $60/hour.  What we cover is up to you.  It includes free web conferencing features as described below.  I will bill you for the minimum time period of 1 hour ($60) and if we don't use it all I will make a note of the amount of time remaining for you to use in future support calls.  1 hour is usually plenty to get most people on the right track.  Phone charges are not an issue as I will call you.  After you place the order, please call to schedule a time for the training.  The best time for me is usually between 9 AM and 5 PM, or between 9 PM and 11 PM U.S. Central Time, Monday through Friday, but other times can be arranged.

International Support
In 2010 I had my first international paid support customers.  I enjoyed working with customers in Australia, the United Kingdom, Canada and Israel.  We connected using the free internet phone calls available from Skype.  We used screen sharing features in Skype and Adobe ConnectNow so that I could view their computer screen - making it easy to walk them through complex soaring related tasks.  I really enjoyed helping them get the most out of their soaring software and instruments.

Customer Feedback

"Thank you, Paul, for your marvelous support.  Not only is your website a fabulous source of information for glider pilots, but you've been unfailingly responsive to my hardware and software needs.  Last but not least, I've gotten much more out of my equipment as a result of our remote-tutoring sessions by cell phone and computer hook-up.  Thanks again!"

Paul,

"Now that the soaring season is over, I wanted to thank you for another wonderful year of support from you in connection with my soaring activities.  It's been wonderful knowing that you are there to help with technical problems, and I love the opportunity to have remote tutoring sessions with you.  Thanks again, very much."

Skype
If you want to call me for free you can reach me using Skype.  It is a free internet phone service that requires only a high-speed internet connection and a microphone and speaker for your computer.  You can download it free here: http://www.skype.com.

Web Conferencing - Included - Free of Charge
I include free web conferencing with all technical support calls.  I use a free service called Adobe ConnectNow.  It makes it easy to connect our computers and (with your permission) view your screen.  I have been using web conferencing a lot lately for one-on-one training/support sessions.  I can talk you though a software download or soaring software feature and you learn from the experience because you do the work while I watch.  I can also take control of your machine (only with your permission) to do complex tasks more quickly.  The web conferencing is amazing.  It is as if I am in the same room with the you, looking over your shoulder (at the PC screen only - no need to comb your hair or get out of your pajamas).  There is no need to install software at your end.  I use this service during nearly every phone support session I do - several times a week.  To connect to my computer using Adobe ConnectNow, go to: https://connectnow.acrobat.com/paulremde.

PDAorPNA-Setup PDA or PNA Setup  - Very Popular
Are you looking forward to flying with your new soaring flight software, but a bit intimidated by the process of installing it and setting it up on your new PDA or PNA?  Send it to me - I'll get it up and running and back to you in no time.  Below is a list of some of the items I do to get your PDA or PNA ready to fly.  I use a checklist to make sure I don't forget anything.

Setup Items

  • Set backlight to brightest setting and change settings to it does not or dim when the unit is powered with external power
  • Set power settings to the unit does not power-off in flight
  • Set Calendar and Clock to your time zone
  • Enter pilot name, phone and e-mail into the PDA's owner screen - so the unit can be returned to you if lost and found
  • On iPAQ 310 units - install the screen rotate driver if "portrait" mode is desired (recommended)
  • Install the desired soaring flight software onto the device
  • Enter your license key into the soaring flight software
  • Enter data for your glider into the soaring flight software (polar data, N#, Contest #)
  • Create waypoint, airspace and map files for your favorite soaring site or sites and store them on the device and/or memory card (first 3 sites included, $10/each for additional sites)
  • Set font sizes and other settings in the software to good sizes for the particular PDA or PNA type
  • On PDAs I use the built-in backup utility or Sprite Backup ($19.95) to backup the PDA settings and files to the SD memory card.
  • When you receive the device it is ready to go flying

Supported Products

  • Glide Navigator II
  • SeeYou Mobile
  • pocket*StrePla
  • LX Navigation Colibri
  • LX7000, LX7007, LX8000

Recommendation - Have me help you setup your PDA or PNA over the phone!
As an alternative to having me setup the PDA or PNA here at my office, I often recommend phone support.  You keep the PDA or PNA with you.  I call you and connect to your computer so I can see your screen.  I then walk you through the software installation and waypoint, airspace and map file generation and general PDA setup.  The advantage is that you don't need to pay to ship the PDA both ways, and there is no waiting for it to ship.  But the biggest advantage is that you learn how to do the PDA setup while we do it together.  That way it serves as both support and training - so you can do it yourself in the future.  It usually takes 1 to 2 hours of phone support to get the PDA setup.  Therefore, it costs about the same as it would to ship the unit to me, have me set it up here and ship it back to you (about $80).

Calibration

Flight Recorder Calibration
On January 15, 2010 Cumulus Soaring, Inc. received approval from the Soaring Society of America as an approved GPS flight recorder and barograph calibration lab.

IGC Calibration Requirement Frequency Change
In the past, IGC rules required GPS flight recorders to be calibrated every 2 years. In October of 2013 the IGC changed the rule - requiring GPS flight recorders to be calibrated every 5 years. It does not matter whether your last calibration was done before or after October 2013. To use it for badge or record verification it must have been calibrated within 5 years. For some badges and records it is acceptable to get the calibration done after flight (within 60 days?). However, some national and world altitude records require calibration both before (within 5 years) and after (within 30 days?) the flight. The new 5 year fule is in section 4.4.4 in the 2013 edition of the Sporting Code, Section 3.
http://www.fai.org/igc-news/37866-sporting-code-section-3-updates-for-2013

Send your unit to me and I will calibrate it quickly and accurately. I work hard to provide the most accurate, detailed and highest altitude calibration data available. My calibration system can go up to more than 60,000+ feet (as you can see in the data sheets at right). Note: Not all GPS flight recorders record altitudes that high, but many do.

My calibration lab meets all the requirements put forward by the SSA for Category 2 Calibration Labs.  You can see details on the SSA web site here: http://www.ssa.org/myhome.asp?mbr=5361749529&show=blog&id=941

I also follow all the procedures and requirements set forward by the FAI in the Sporting Code Section 3 (Gliding), Annex C ("Official Observer & Pilot Guide"), Section 11 ("Flight Recorders - Calibration Procedure") which is available here: http://www.fai.org/igc-documents

Brands Supported
I am able to calibrate all brands and types of barographs and flight recorders.  I can calibrated and re-seal the brands listed below.

  • Cambridge GPS-NAV, 302, 302A
  • ClearNav Flight Computer, ClearNav Variometer
  • EW: Model D, microRecorder
  • FLARM, PowerFLARM

  • Zander GP940

Fast Service
I realize that there are times when calibrations are needed urgently.  1 day service is standard.

Barographs must be calibrated every year and GPS Flight Recorders must be calibrated every 2 years.  Calibration is necessary if you are using the unit as flight evidence for badge or record flights.

Payment
Please include a check for $95 plus the estimated return shipping cost.  UPS Ground is usually less than $25 (with insurance).  If you overpay I will include a refund check in the box with the unit.

Quantity Discounts
I can put many flight recorders into the calibration chamber at one time and make a single calibration run. That saves me considerable time. However the paperwork still takes time for each individual unit. I therefore offer the discounts below when I receive multiple units for calibration at once. You also save money on shipping costs when you send multiple loggers to me in one shipment. The discounts only apply to units shipped to me in a single box and paid for with a single check. The units must also be shipped back to a single address.

  • 1 unit: $95
  • 2 units: $90 each
  • 3 units: $85 each
  • 4 units: $80 each
  • 5 or more units: $75 each

Logger-ReSeal Reset Electronic Security Seal on GPS Flight Recorder
For whatever reason, secure flight recorders sometimes loose their security seal.  It may be due to low voltage of the backup battery, or due to static electricity, who knows.  As a dealer for many brands of soaring flight recorders, I am able to act as a factory service center and reset the electronic security seal on most flight recorders.
