RAM Ball Sizes
I stock 2 sizes are RAM parts. The A size parts use 9/16 inch
(14.3 mm) diameter balls and the B size parts use 1 inch (25.4 mm) balls.
Be careful to select all A or B sized components when you order because A
size balls will not fit in B size arm ends, etc.

See the Cradle Comparison page for details on the
advantages and disadvantages of the cradle options available from Cumulus Soaring, Inc..
More Mount Parts Available
RAM has a huge variety of mounting accessories for many GPSs and PDAs.
While I do have a sizeable inventory of RAM parts, I don't stock all of
them. But I can get any RAM part. Just let me know what you need, and I'll get
it for you.

Cradle
for Compaq iPAQ Pocket PC
Plastic cradle for all Compaq iPAQ 3000 and 5000 series Pocket PC's. It will hold
the PDA with or without all of its accessories attached. It's
design allows access to CF cards, the stylus, the power and data
connector, etc. It also accommodates the Compaq Expansion Pack Plus

RAM-HOL-CO2P |
Powered Cradle
for iPAQ Pocket PCs
Compatible with an iPAQ that fits into an expansion pack -
including: 3100, 3600, 3700, 3800, 3900, 5000 series. It will hold
the iPAQ either with or without the iPAQ mounted in an expansion pack
(sleeve). Input power can be provided to the power connector, or
to pin 9 (+) and pin 5 (-) on the DB-9m connector. Accepts 12 to 28 VDC power and supplies 5 VDC power to the iPAQ.
Important Note: Since the internal power
converter is quite noisy it is not recommended for use in sailplanes
because it will interfere with the aircraft radio. The
optional Goddard Modification (see details below) eliminates that
problem by adding a cable that exits the back of the cradle and removing
the cradle's internal power converter.
Mounting holes on the back are for use with any
diamond shaped base plate - like the RAM-A-238,
RAM-B-238, RAP-B-238
or RAM-GN-238.
Important Note: To place the iPAQ
into the cradle first insert the top of the iPAQ into the top of the
cradle and slide the top of the cradle up. Then swing the base of
the iPAQ into the cradle and carefully lower it onto the power/data
connector. Remove it by first lifting the iPAQ up and then
swinging the base of the iPAQ out of the cradle. It would be
easy to damage the power/data connector in the cradle or the iPAQ by
trying to insert the power/data connector into the iPAQ before placing
the iPAQ flush against the back of the cradle or by removing the top of
the iPAQ while the power/data connector is still engaged in the iPAQ.

Optional Goddard Cradle Modification - $79 (modification) + $79 (cradle)
= $158 -
Highly recommended for use in sailplanes

Goddard has now made available a service for
modifying RAM powered PDA cradles so that the
cable exits the back of the cradle and the noisy internal
power converter is removed. The RAM-HOL-CO2P, CO3P and CO4P
cradles are nice, but the standard connection with the cable connector
on the bottom of the cradle is not ideal. Connecting a cable with
a DB-9 connector to the bottom of the unit makes for less room in a cramped glider cockpit and the
connector interferes with your leg in flight. Also, the internal 12V
to 5V power converter has proven to be too noisy for use in sailplanes
because it interferes with the aircraft radio. Since there is no
connection for 5V power on the bottom connector, the cradle must be
modified for use in a glider. The modified cradle setup makes for a very
clean installation. Since the internal power converter is removed, 5V
power must be provided to the cradle from a Cambridge
302, 302A or
Goddard PS-5a. To connect to any
of those devices you will want to order the DB-9m connector option.
To connect to a Cambridge CAA-127
57 mm adapter plate you will want to order the RJ connector option.
I will try to keep a few units with DB-9m connectors and 1m cables in
stock. Otherwise the lead-time for the modification is 2 to 3
weeks. |

RAM-HOL-CO5P |
Powered Cradle
for most iPAQ Pocket PCs
Input power can be provided to the power connector, or to pin 9 (+)
and pin 5 (-) on the DB-9m connector. Accepts 12 to 28 VDC power and supplies 5 VDC power to the iPAQ.
Standard unit ships with a power cable with bare leads and a power cable
with a cigarette lighter adapter. The top set of fingers are mounted on
a spring loaded slider that allow the cradle to accommodate a wide
variety of PDA heights. The side fingers are mounted in slots so
they can be adjusted for a wide range of PDA widths. The side
finders are mounted using nuts and screws that are accessible from the
back of the cradle so they can be adjusted easily. Mounting holes on the back are for use with any
diamond shaped base plate - like the RAM-A-238,
RAM-B-238, RAP-B-238
or RAM-GN-238.
Comparison with the Seidio G2100S Cradle
The RAM-HOL-CO5P holds the iPAQ more securely than the Seidio
GS2100S cradle so I recommend the
CO5P for tough applications such as in 4x4 off-road vehicles or on bikes
or motorcycles. However, the Seidio
GS2100S cradle is much smaller
and more elegant than the CO5P so I recommend it for use in sailplanes.
Assembly Instructions
I recommend that you print these assembly instructions on a color
printer. The black and white copy that ships with the units is
difficult to read.

Customer Feedback
"The RAM-HOL-GA14 fits the GPS-96C just fine, and two of the three ports
on the back are available when the GPS is in the mount (the antenna port
and the USB port). However, the serial port (the round Garmin plug) is
covered by the mount. To access it without repeatedly flexing the mount
to remove and reinstall the GPS, one would have to cut a section out of
the back between the lower two mounting holes, right where it says
76C/76CS on the inside face of the mount. Due to the odd orientation of
the plug, the cutaway must be flared to the left as you look at the back
of the mount to accommodate the cable which goes down and to the left as
you look at the back of the GPS."
However, The owner of RAM sent me a response to the statement above, "I
have a GA14 on my boat with the serial cable and it works fine."
They must be using different serial cables... |

Plastic cradle for most any PDA (Pocket PC or Palm),
Compatible with Compaq Aero 1500 series Pocket PC's (with slight
modification). It does not hold an iPAQ in an expansion sleeve

of the mount to make room for the data connector (see photos at right).
Works great with the RAM-A-101 mount extension below. It also
works nicely with a Dell Axim X5 Pocket PC and a CF Card GPS, but some
filing is required to make room for the CF Card GPS. I have not
yet tested it with the Dell Axim X5 Pocket PC with the optional large

I have used the PD2 cradle with a variety of PDA in my glider cockpit
for many years. The rubber tips on the fingers hold the PDA very
securely. However, I just received a cradle and was setting it up for a
customer and found that the finger tips were slippery and did not keep
the PDA from sliding. I talked to RAM about it and they said that
sometimes the release agent used during the molding process causes this
problem. They suggested washing the fingers with a mild soap.
That seemed to work great for me. If you receive fingers that
don't seem to hold the PDA securely, try washing them. If that
doesn't work I will replace them. |

RAM-HOL-UN1 |
Cradle,
Universal, Small Size
Plastic cradle for most any cell phone or similarly sized device.
The button on the left/bottom of the cradle releases the spring loaded
sides so they can extend to their maximum width. As you squeeze
the sides in they click and hold to clamp onto your device. The
sides are padded with a soft foam rubber which holds on to the device.
Mounting screws are nuts are included which can be used to mount the
cradle to any RAM diamond shaped mounting base such as a RAM-B-238 or
RAM-A-238. It seems to work well with phones but the soft sides
wouldn't hold a PDA very well. It is not wide enough to hold iPAQ

RAM-HOL-UN2 |
Cradle,
Universal, Medium Size
Plastic cradle for most any cell phone or similarly sized device.
The button on the back/bottom of the cradle releases the spring loaded
sides so they can extend to their maximum width. As you squeeze
the sides in they click and hold to clamp onto your device. The
sides are padded with a soft foam rubber which holds on to the device.
The sides are designed with slots so they won't activate buttons on the
side of the device and to allow a headset cable to exit the side of the
device. It works great with my cell phone (see photos at right).
I use on in my car. Mounting screws are nuts are included which
can be used to mount the cradle to any RAM diamond shaped mounting base
such as a RAM-B-238 or RAM-A-238. It seems to work well with
phones but the soft sides don't hold a PDA very well. It is not
wide enough to hold iPAQ PDAs. Can accommodate items from 40 mm (1.57
in) to 70 mm (2.76 in) wide.

Articulated Arms |
| RAM-A-101 |
Articulated Arm, Short,
"A" Size
Articulated Aluminum Arm, Length: 3 1/8 inches (80 mm) from base
plate to base plate, The arm is 1.75 inches (44 mm) from ball center to
ball center, 2 Aluminum base plates with small 9/16" (14mm) balls,
weight: 2.4 oz (68 g), Diamond shaped mounting plates are 1.25" (31.8
mm) x 2.5" (63.5 mm). Mounting hardware not included. This
"A" sized mount is significantly smaller than the large "B" sized mounts
below. The base plates have the same footprint, but the arms are
very different. I recommend this "A" sized mount for
light
applications. The "B" sized mounts are nice when a longer reach
and more rugged arm is
desired (most soaring applications). Most people find that the "A"
sized components work fine for holding a Pocket PC in an aircraft or
automobile, however, I have received a significant number of complaints
about the rubber balls detaching from the bases. I therefore recommend the larger "B" sized arms for
most soaring applications. |

3.1 oz (88 g), Diamond shaped mounting plates are 1.25" (31.8 mm) x 2.5"

mount is significantly smaller than the large "B" sized mounts below.
The base plates have the same footprint, but the arms are very
different. I recommend this "A" sized mount for most applications.
The "B" sized mounts are nice when a longer reach is desired. The
"B" sized components are more stiff than the "A" sized parts. Some
people prefer the "B" sized parts for that reason. Most people
find that the "A" sized components work fine for holding a Pocket PC in an
aircraft or automobile, however, I have received some returns due to the
balls coming off. I therefore recommend the larger "B" sized arms
for most soaring applications. |

Flex Arm, 6 inch
This is a very stiff flexible arm. It is not are rugged as the
GNeck2 Gooseneck. The overall length from
base to base is 7.75" (19.69 cm). It consists of two plastic
diamond shaped mounting plates and a metal (aluminum I think) rod with a
plastic cover. It is stiff enough for use holding a Pocket PC or
GPS without any drooping under severe loads (loops, hard landings,
etc.). Since the rod is made of metal, it is not meant to be bent
to extreme positions very many times. Like any gooseneck it can be
adjusted using one hand. If it is too long you can bend it into an
S-shape for a minimum length of about 3.5" (89 mm), Weight: 1.6 oz (45

RAM-202PSA |
Rubber Mounting Pad with
VHB Adhesive, 2 7/16" Diameter
This is a thin rubber pad with strong adhesive on both sides.
It can be used to mount a RAM-B-202 or
RAP-273 base. One of these is included with
the RAP-273 base. It could also be cut down
to a diamond shape and used with a RAM-B-238 or
RAM-A-238 diamond base - but the smaller area
of the diamond bases would reduce the holding force when compared with
the round bases. For best results: apply to a clean, dry surface.
Weight: 0.2 oz (6 g)
Warning: The adhesive is very strong - making it difficult to remove. |

| RAM-B-201 |
Double Socket Arm for 1"
Ball, Aluminum
Note: This are is very rugged, but it is heavy. For most
applications the lighter RAP-B-201 arm is
recommended. The RAP-B-201 is less
expensive and very rugged.
The arm has a socket at either end to allow a 1" diameter ball
(size "B")
accessories to be connected. A tightening screw on the side of the arm
enables the sockets to clamp firmly on a 1" diameter ball.
When loosening the side screw, a single spring inside the arm opens the
socket for maneuvering of the mount, or removing of the ball from the
socket. The length of this standard size arm is
3 inches (76.2 mm). The
arm size is measured from center of socket to center of socket.
This part is great for use with the RAM-B-224 suction cup base.
It can also be used with two RAP-B-238 base plates (below) to create a
mount arm with a length of 5.625 inches (143 mm) or with two
RAM-B-238 base plates to
create a 5 inch (127 mm) mount arm. Weight: 4.5 oz |

RAM-B-201-A |
Double Socket Arm for 1"
Ball, Short, Aluminum
Note: This arm is very short. I recommend the
RAP-B-201 arm more this one because it is, less expensive, longer
and just slightly heavier due to its plastic construction rather.
However, if you need a short arm that will accommodate 1" (B size)
balls, this is a very nice little arm. The arm has a socket at either end to allow a 1" diameter ball
(size "B") accessories to be connected. A tightening screw on the side of the arm
enables the sockets to clamp firmly on a 1" diameter ball. The length of this
short length arm is 1.75 inch (44 mm). The
arm length is measured from center of socket to center of socket.
This part can be used with two RAP-B-238 base
plates (below) to create a mount arm with a length of 4.375 inches (111
mm) or with two RAM-B-238 base plates to create
a 3.75 inches (95 mm) mount arm. Weight: 2.8 oz (79 g), Detailed
