Colibri GPS Flight
Recorder, Version 4 (IGC Approved)
This new version offers some very nice new features.
- Built-in
microSD
card reader - New
Can be used to transfer flights, Turnpoint and Task data and
flight info. Includes a 32 MB TransFlash card and microSD/TransFlash
to SD card adapter so that the very small memory card can be read
with an SD card reader.
- USB Connector for connecting to
PC
This is a very nice feature because most new laptops do not have
RS-232 serial ports. Not only can you transfer data over USB,
but the USB connection also powers the Colibri so no 12V power
converter is required. The same RJ connector as found on
version 3 Colibri units is used when in the glider for connecting
the Colibri to 12V power and a flight computer or Pocket PC.
- New Membrane Keyboard
The new keyboard has 2 new keys that make it easier to do task
declarations and change pilot/glider data.
- Pilot and Glider Data
The Colibri can now store data for up to 100 pilots and 30 gliders.
That makes it ideal for soaring club use.
Very small but capable flight logger. This unit is very
popular.
A remote mountable antenna is included. It plugs into the bottom of the
unit and may be mounted on the unit using Velcro or double-sided tape or
anywhere in the glider with a good view of the sky.
Dimensions: Width: 59 mm (2.323"), Height 35 mm (1.378"),
Depth: 98 mm (3.858")
Weight: 200 g (7 oz)
Memory: 50 hours with a 12 sec recording interval (15,000 log points)
16.667 hours with a 4 second interval
Database 600 waypoints, 100 tasks, 4500 airfields, 100 pilots, 30
gliders
Included:
- Colibri GPS/Flight Recorder
- Antenna for GPS with 1.4 m (56 inch) cable with BNC connector
- USB Cable for data transfer with PC.
The Colibri is also powered by this cable when connected to the PC.
- Power Cable for use in glider
- PDA Cable for connecting to an LXIPQ
PDA wiring harness
- PC Cable (12V power supply not included)
- Mounting Plate with retaining screw
- Calibration Paperwork
- Software CD
- Soft protective case for Colibri
- Manual
Tom Rent's Review
Tom Rent is a Schweizer 1-35C pilot from Minnesota who created a nice
online write-up on the Colibri. It can be found here:
Colibri.htm Option to Shorten the GPS
Antenna Cable
The Colibri comes with an external antenna with a 1.4 m (56 inch)
cable. Many customers Velcro the antenna to the top of the Colibri
and don't need that much cable. I can shorten the cable to any
length you desire. I charge $19.95 for the new BNC connector and
labor. You can select the cable length when you place your order.
There is also an option for a BNC-RA BNC elbow
adapter for $9.95 (see drawing below). With the BNC elbow adapter the minimum
recommended antenna cable length is 8 inches (20.3 cm). Without
the optional elbow adapter 10 inches (25.4 cm) is the minimum recommended
antenna cable length. Power Supply Not
Included
If your PC does not have a USB port you can connect to the PC using the
included RS-232 PC serial data cable.
The Colibri comes with an impressive list of accessories, but it does
not include a 12V "wall charger" (120 VAC to 12V DC converter) for
powering the unit when using the PC Cable at home. I recommend the
optional Pwr-12V-500mA power supply found
below.
Note: The power supply is not required if you connect the Colibri to
your PC through the USB port because the USB connection powers the
Colibri. However, when the Colibri is powered though the USB port
the menus are not accessible using the keypad and LCD display. The
Colibri must be powered with a 12V power source if you want to check the
GPS or play with the unit before you fly.
Therefore, the optional 12V wall power supply is a good idea if you
want to play with the Colibri at home without connecting it to your
glider battery. The supplied "PC Cable" can be used to
connect the wall power supply to the Colibri.

Colibri-BB (Black Box) GPS Flight
Recorder, Version 3 (IGC Approved)
This "black box" version does not have a keypad or LCD display.
It is otherwise identical to the version 3 model of the Colibri.
The version 3 model has an RS-232 serial port only for connection to a
PC. It does not have a USB port as found on the version 4 models.
The lack of a keyboard and LCD display make this unit extremely easy to
use - just plug it in and go fly. However, task declarations and
flight downloads must be done using a PC or Pocket PC.
History: This version was originally designed as a low cost version of
the Colibri, but the cost was almost the same and low demand made it
expensive to market - so the price is now the same as the full version
of the Colibri.
Very small but capable IGC approvedl flight logger.
A remote mountable antenna is included. It plugs into the bottom of the
unit and may be mounted on the unit using Velcro or double-sided tape or
anywhere in the glider with a good view of the sky.

| LX160si |
LX 160si Vario/Flight
Computer
The LX160si is an interesting product because it starts off at a
very simple, low cost level but can be upgraded in the future to include
a GPS or IGC approved flight recorder and even a Pocket PC running
soaring flight software. See the
Flight Computer Comparison
page to see example systems. The basic system includes a
variometer with audio, averager and speed-to-fly data and an a panel
mounted control unit with switches that are used to set the final glide
parameters. It will manually count down the remaining distance to
go. It is great for soaring clubs.
By adding a
Colibri or Filser LX
20 you get a system which gets destination distance from the GPS and
you now have a system with an IGC approved flight recorder.
The addition of the soaring flight
software on a Pocket PC adds a graphical moving map with reachable
airports highlighted on the map. The soaring flight software
provides final glide data so the switches on the front of the LX160si
are not needed for final glide computations. The LX160si provides
5V power for the Pocket PC so no external 12V to 5V power converter is
required.
The LX160si can airspeed and
variometer data into the NMEA data stream and send it to the PDA.
SeeYou Mobile and WinPilot can use that data.
The "si" version of the LX160 is different from the original version
because it has new connectors on the back to make it easier to connect
to a Colibri and Pocket PC. It also can provide 5V power (2 A) for
the Pocket PC - previous models couldn't do that.
· LCD Display
· Electric Vario with Audio
· Speed to fly and Averager
· Final Glide Calculator with NMEA input from any GPS
· Easy to read display
· 2 X 57mm instrument cut-out
· Read-out +/- 10 Knots
· Temperature range -20°C to 70°C
· Operating voltage 9-16 Vdc
· Power consumption: 110 mA @ 12V
· Easy to use 3 position switches
· Provides 5V (2A) power for a Pocket PC.
· Fully compatible with the new SeeYou Mobile
. Now fully compatible with WinPilot (V2.12) Includes an
external speaker which is very similar to
this one.

LX 1600 Vario/Flight
Computer
A nice small electric vario with averager, audio and speed-to-fly.
This units does not include a GPS so it is generally used with a
Colibri or Filser LX
20, but most any GPS will work. All cables are included for connecting to those units.
When connected to a GPS it can send GPS and flight data to the Pocket
PC. MacCready setting and other parameters can be edited with the
buttons on the front of the unit, but it works best when connected to a
Pocket PC running
flyWithCE Navigator or SeeYou Mobile. A cable is included for connecting to an iPAQ
2200, 3800, 3900, 4000, or 5000 series Pocket PC. The LX 1600
provides 5V power for the Pocket PC. Includes an
external speaker which is very similar to
this one.The LX1600 can
airspeed and variometer data into the NMEA data stream and send it to
the PDA. SeeYou Mobile and WinPilot can use that data.
Note: Software, Pocket PC and Pocket PC cradle not included.

LX 7007 Pro IGC
SD Card Interface -
New
The SD Card interface makes LX 7007 absolute autonomous. All possible
data transfers may be done by the standard SD card. There simply is no
need to connect the laptop to your LX 7007 anymore. All units delivered
after August 2006 are equipped with the card reader interface and one SD
card. It is also available as a simple and cost effective upgrade of the
existing LX 7007 units. As it is a non integrated device it may be
installed anywhere in the cockpit.
The following SD Card data transfer functions are available:
- Flight download
- TP/TSK upload and download
- Airport and Airspace database upload
- Flight info (declaration) upload and
download
- Settings upload and download
The LX7007 Pro IGC is the replacement for the LX7000 Pro IGC.
New features include a faster processor, the ability to power a PDA with
5V power and perhaps (I'm not certain) more memory for flight logs,
waypoint and airspace files. A single cable connects to a PDA and
provides GPS data and 5V power. Data exchange is also possible
with a Colibri using a single cable which powers the Colibri. The LX7007 Pro IGC is a complete soaring flight computer with IGC approved GPS flight recorder,
moving map display, variometer, speed-to-fly and averager.
This is the ultimate soaring system for pilots who prefer not to use a
Pocket PC in the cockpit. The large 240 x 160 pixel display offers
graphics that are easy to read in the cockpit. Complete support
for Turn Area Tasks (Assigned Area Tasks). Flight Recorder Memory: 190 hours with a 12 second recording interval
(684,000 log points) 63 hours with a 4 second recording interval. Includes an
external speaker which is very similar to this one. Includes SeeYou version 1.9. That is not the latest version of
SeeYou, but having a license for version 1.9 gives you the option to
upgrade to the latest version of
SeeYou for about $88.

and LX8000
The LX Voice Module
was developed to make LX 7007 pro IGC and LX8000 units even more user
friendly by providing voice warnings and information generated by the
built in voice synthesizer.
The LX Voice Module does not require the external power supply.
There are also no additional speakers necessary as the built in audio
mixer makes the existing vario speaker also available for the voice.
Hardware Configuration
A suitable aluminum black box (55x22x75mm) may be installed anywhere in
the cockpit. Three digital inputs also allow connection of other
external sensors providing e.g. landing gear or air brakes status
signals
LX7007 or LX8000 Optional Voice Module
The unit is powered and controlled via the LX system bus.
The existing speaker should only be reconnected from the LX
7007 or LX8000 output to the Voice Module output. The unit
includes the audio mixer controlled by the LX 7007 or LX8000
to reduce the vario volume during the Voice Module active
time. The mixer setting is controlled entirely by the pilot.
The LX 7007 or LX8000 with Flarm option also provides Flarm
warnings to the Voice Module.

BNC-RA |
BNC Elbow
The BNC elbow can be used with some GPS and Radio antenna cables to
reduce the amount of cable space required at the point the antenna
connects to the device. It is very nice for use on the bottom of
the Colibri because it allows the use of a very short antenna cable. |
