IC-A14 and Accessories
IC-A14 IC-A14 - VHF Air Band Transceiver (COM Only)

700mW* loud audio
Because air band radios are usually operated in high-noise environments, it is essential for the radio to provide loud and clear audio. The IC-A14/S series employs a BTL amplifier that doubles the audio output, offering loud and clear audio thatíll cut through cabin or tarmac noise.
* Internal speaker only

Full keypad
The IC-A14 full keypad type allows you to input the channel or frequency directly and has an exclusive button for the 121.5MHz emergency channel. The IC-A14 receives NAV and WX channels.

Compact, light weight and rugged body
The IC-A14/S series is compact (only 120mm tall) and light weight (approx. 350g including antenna and BP-232N). The water resistant construction, equivalent to IPX4, provides reliable operation in wet conditions.

Large capacity Lithium-Ion battery pack
With the 2000mAh large capacity Lithium-Ion battery pack, BP-232N, the IC-A14/S series provides stable output power and 18 hours long (approx.) operating time*. The BP-261, battery case takes 6 AA (LR6) alkaline cells for convenient battery backup.
* Typical operation,
On standby 90% of the time, transmitting 5% of the time and receiving 5% of the time.

200 channels with memory banks
A total of 200* memory channels can be named with an 8-character channel name for easy recognition. For fast and simple operation, these channels can be grouped into 10 memory banks*.
* IC-A14 only. The IC-A14S has 100 memory channels and memory banks are not available.

BC-179 holder type battery charger
The battery charger, BC-179, securely holds and charges the radio, even in bumpy conditions. The cigarette lighter cable, CP-22, can be used with the BC-179.

Other outstanding features

  • 5W typ. (PEP), 1.5W (CW) output power
  • Side tone function allows you to hear your own voice via a third party aviation headset
  • LCD backlight for night time operation
  • ANL (Auto Noise Limiter) for noise reduction
  • Low battery indication and beep alert
  • Adjustable microphone gain setting
  • BNC type antenna connector

CS-A14 PC Programming Software - ICOM Cloning System
Makes it easy to edit, save and transfer the memory contents and settings in the IC-A14 or A14S.  You can upload data from an existing radio, edit the memory frequencies and 8-character text descriptions, save the data on your PC, and send the updated data to one or more radios.   I love this software because it made it very easy to configure the 10 or so frequencies I use when gliding in southern Minnesota - you can see them in the screen capture images at right.  It is somewhat expensive, but soaring clubs and commercial operations will find it worth the money.  The software is simple and intuitive.

Note: Data can only be transferred to radios of the same type.  For example you can copy data from one A14 to another A14 or from one A14S to another A14S.  But it is not possible to copy data from an A14 to an A14S or vice versa.

Note: An OPC-478UC USB cable is required and not included with the software.

FA-B02AR Antenna
Same as supplied with the transceiver. For IC-A4, A5, A6, A14, A14S, A23, A24, and A25 radios.
Connector Type: BNC
Length: 20 cm (7.8 inches)
Note: It is not clear to me whether or not handheld radio antennas are interchangeable.  The reason I wonder is because I have had a variety of handheld radios standing next to each other on a table.  It was interesting to me that although the radio units were of different heights and the antennas were of different lengths, the overall heights of the radio and antenna together were all about the same.  That made me suspect that the overall antenna length includes antenna sections both inside the radio itself, and the external antenna.  My suspicion is enhanced by the fact that a 1/4 wave aircraft radio antenna from Larsen is 22 7/16 inches (570 mm) long.  However, I also suspect that this ICOM antenna would be a good substitute for any other handheld radio antenna with BNC connectors that is about the same length.  I am not an expert on radio antennas.

Tip - Fixing Squeal Issue - if necessary
A customer stated that when using the HM-234 with his A14, the system squeals loudly every time he keys the microphone button on the HM-234. I found that the same thing happened with my A14. I called ICOM America technical support and received excellent support - as always. I set the side-tone to zero by depressing and holding the transmit button (on the radio or speaker/mic) and using the down-arrow on the radio to bump the side-tone to zero.  That worked for me.

If that doesn't work, he recommended turning-off the internal microphone - as described on page 26 of the manual under "other functions, set mode settings".  I didn't need to do that.  He also said that adjusting the internal microphone gain might also help.

Navigation functions
Built-in GPS and Bluetooth® redefined navigation in the A25N. Design flight plans with an Android™ or iOS™ device and import them into the A25 with the Bluetooth® feature. While using GPS, the waypoint NAV will guide pilots to their destination. Up to 10 flight plans and 300 waypoints can be stored in the A25. Other navigational features, like VOR indicators, can help keep a pilot’s heading precise and alert them if they divert from course. All these functions and more increase safety up in the air.

VOR navigation functions
(IC-A25N only - not IC-A25C)

  • CDI (Course Deviation Indicator) looks like a real VOR instrument and displays any deviation from your course.
  • OBS (Omni Bearing Selector) enables you to change course from your original flight plan.
  • TO-FROM indicator shows the position relationship between your aircraft and the course selected by the OBS.
  • ABSS (Automatic Bearing Set System) enables you to set the current course as a new course.
