inReach Satellite Service Plans
Garmin offers a variety of flexible satellite service subscription plans, beginning at just $11.95 per month for the basic Safety plan with annual contract.

3 Service Plan Options

  • Annual Contract Plans - Unlimited tracking with the Recreational plan make this a great option if you use the device all year and are OK with 10 minute tracking updates. Going to 2 minute updates would be expensive. There is no annual program fee. There is a one-time activation fee of $19.95. Moving up to a higher plan is free. Moving down will incur a fee of $24.95. inReach Freedom and Annual Contract Plans - USA or inReach Freedom and Annual Contract Plans - Outside the USA
  • Freedom Plans - Unlimited tracking with the Recreational plan make this a great option if you use the device for only part of the year and are OK with 10 minute tracking updates. Going to 2 minute updates would be expensive. Service can be suspended for part of the year (no fees while suspended). Moving up to higher plans and down to lower plans is free (hence the name of the plan). There is an annual program fee of $24.95. At $34.95/month for the Recreation plan, if you use it for only 6 months/year you would pay a total of $234.65/year. Minimum 30-day commitment when you move up a plan. inReach Freedom and Annual Contract Plans - USA or inReach Freedom and Annual Contract Plans - Outside the USA
  • Enterprise Plans - Great if you want 0.5, 1, 2, or 5 minute tracking updates and are OK with paying a bit more. Service can be suspended for $5/month. The plan options are somewhat complicated (see tables below) because costs are based on the number of bytes used. Moving up to a higher plan or down to a lower plan will incur a fee of $24.95. There is no annual program fee. There is a one-time activation fee of $24.95. inReach Enterprise Service Plans - USA or inReach Enterprise Service Plans - Outside the USA

Key take-aways from the table above:

  • For a given Enterprise plan, the overage rates are less expensive/hour than the plan rates - so overages are not unreasonably expensive. For example, with the Byte-Based Plan 4 plan the plan rate is $0.35/100 Bytes while the overage rate is $0.16/100 Bytes.
  • Enterprise Byte-Based Plan 4 looks like a very good option because the overage rate is the lowest. That is the plan I plan to use during the flying season. I suspend the unit for the non-flying season.

  • Built-in digital compass,
  • Built-in barometric altimeter
  • Built-in accelerometer

Explore Anywhere. Communicate Everywhere.
Using the worldwide coverage of the Iridium satellite network, these go-anywhere portable devices let you exchange text messages with any cell phone number or email address anywhere – while using GPS to track and share your journey’s progress. You can also post to social media or even communicate inReach-to-inReach in the field.

In case of an at-risk situation, you can also use inReach to trigger an SOS to the 24/7 monitoring center, text back and forth about the nature of your emergency, and receive confirmation when help is on the way.

No Cell Tower? No Phone Service? No Problem.
inReach SE+ and Explorer+ give you all the tools to stay totally connected. You don’t have to worry about being within range of a cell tower – or encountering spotty coverage in fringe zones or blackout areas. Your inReach communicator works anywhere and everywhere – so you’re never out of range, never out of reach.

Track and Share Your Whereabouts
Turn on the tracking function of your inReach SE+ or Explorer+ communicator, and let family and friends follow your progress on their computers or mobile devices, using the web-based MapShare® portal. The inReach device will send waypoints at preselected time intervals, so followers can track your whereabouts online. You can also invite your crew back home to use MapShare to ping your inReach unit and see your GPS location, track your movements and exchange messages during your trip. You can even embed your MapShare page on a blog, website or social media.

Pair with Your Mobile Device
For even more capability and convenience, the free Earthmate® app syncs your inReach handheld via Bluetooth® with your compatible Apple® or Android™ device¹ so you can access unlimited maps, aerial imagery and U.S. NOAA charts. Plus, Earthmate allows you to conveniently use all of the inReach features on your paired mobile device. For easier messaging, you can also sync your inReach device with your phone’s contact list to reach anyone, anywhere – with fewer keystrokes.

Get Weather Wherever
The optional inReach weather forecast service provides detailed updates directly to your inReach device, compatible smartphone or tablet paired with the Earthmate app, so you’ll know what conditions to expect en route. Basic and premium weather packages are offered. And you can request weather forecasts for your current location or any other waypoint or destination on your itinerary.

Who Will Answer Your SOS? GEOS Will.
GEOS is the world leader in emergency response solutions and monitoring. They’ve supported rescues in more than 140 countries, saving many lives in the process. And they’re standing by 24/7/365 to respond to your SOS, track your device and notify the proper contacts and emergency responders in your area. Then, while help is on the way, GEOS will continue to text back and forth with you, providing updates and critical information until your situation is resolved.

Which inReach Is Right for You?
As satellite communicators, both the inReach SE+ and Explorer+ offer identical messaging capabilities. However, it’s on the GPS navigation side that their differences become apparent. While inReach SE+ uses GPS to provide basic grid navigation and allow you to drop waypoints, mark key locations, track your progress, and follow a breadcrumb trail back to base – the inReach Explorer+ goes a step beyond, providing full-fledged GPS on-map guidance with preloaded TOPO mapping and waypoint routings viewable directly on the unit. Plus, a built-in digital compass, barometric altimeter and accelerometer are included with Explorer+ to help you get and maintain accurate bearings anywhere on or off the beaten path.

Affordable, Flexible Satellite Airtime Plans
To access the Iridium network and communicate with your inReach SE+ or Explorer+ device, an active satellite subscription is required. Depending on your usage level, you can opt for an annual contract package or flexible month-to-month airtime plan.

Unlimited Cloud Storage and Trip Planning are Included
Every inReach device comes with free access to a cloud-powered portal to plan your trips with routes and waypoints, create preset messages and quick texts, sync and manage your device settings, update your firmware, download additional TOPO maps, link your social media accounts, store all your location tracking data and much more.

Built for the Rugged Backcountry
Tough, durable, impact resistant and water-rated to IPX7, the inReach SE+ and Explorer+ handhelds are built to keep you up and running – no matter what the elements throw at you. An internal, rechargeable lithium battery comes standard on both units so you can count on long battery life in every mode of operation (up to 100 hours at 10-minute tracking mode (default); up to 75 hours at 10-minute tracking with 1-second logging; up to 30 days at the 30-minute interval power save mode; and up to 3 years when powered off). Recharge via the standard microUSB power cable or optional in-vehicle 12 V charger.

GPS16x-HVS Garmin GPS 16x HVS

The GPS 16x HVS sensor features a high-sensitivity receiver, integrated antenna and rugged, waterproof design that makes it useful for a variety of applications.

Get Accurate Data
This high-sensitivity, 12-channel receiver continuously tracks satellites and reports your precise position. It is also WAAS-enabled, so it can determine your precise location to within 3 meters — without using an external DGPS beacon receiver.

Leave Interference Behind
The GPS 16x HVS offers excellent EMI/RFI performance, so you can use it near mobile computing devices and wireless communications equipment without worrying about interference.

The GPS 16x HVS is a high-sensitivity GPS sensor that replaces the GPS 16.

This is a great, simple GPS for soaring applications.  I like it because it can be powered with 12 VDC and does not have a magnet built into it (like many small GPS units do).  It is WAAS compatible.

It is perfect for use with an LXNAV S7 variometer.  The S7 powers the unit with 12V and the GPS allows the S7 to do simply "get home" navigation with final glide calculations.

It works very nicely with the ILEC SN-10b because the SN-10b can power the GPS16x HVS.  When ordered with an SN-10b you can have the GPS16x HVS connected to the SN10's panel cable for $59.  A quick-disconnect connector is used to make it easy to route the GPS cable through small openings.

The GPS 16x HVS comes with a cable with an RJ45 (Ethernet) connector.  It can be ordered with an optional DB-9f connector for use with a Pocket PC.  The DB-9f connector plugs directly into a Goddard PS-5a power converter.  The PS-5a provides 12V power for the GPS16x and 5V power for the Pocket PC.

Note: The GPS 16x HVS defaults to a baud rate of 4800.  I can re-program it for any other baud rate for free.  I have PC cables setup for that.  I recommend 19200 baud if you think you may replace it in the future with a FLARM device.

Connector Options

  • RJ45 connector, the customer must connect the +12 VDC power, common and transmit lines. (standard)
Note: It is necessary to connect 3 wires to common - The black (common), yellow (enable) and the shield drain wire should all be connected to ground.  That makes it tough to simply attach an RJ connector because it's not possible to stuff 3 wires into one slot on an RJ connector.
  • LXNAV S7 or S8 or S80 Variometer

Garmin-GA25-BNC Garmin GA 25 BNC GPS Antenna for Colibri, LX20, LX5000, LX7000 and LX7007 Products
Includes a 2.9 m (9.5 ft) cable with a BNC connector.  A similar antenna is included with the Colibri, LX7000 and LX7007.  It is not compatible with the LX8000.

Removable Magnets Installed
The antenna has 2 magnets installed under a thin metal plate on the bottom of the unit.  The magnets can be removed using a small screwdriver.  Just remove the clear plastic sticker that covers the back and set it aside.  Then remove the 4 screws at the outside corners.  It is not necessary to remove the 2 screws near the cable.  Then remove the metal plate and remove the 2 long flat magnets.  Then re-install the metal plate, 4 screws and clear plastic sticker.

I can shorten the cable to any length you desire.  I charge $19.95 for the new BNC connector and labor.  You can select the cable length when you place your order. There is also an option for a BNC-RA BNC elbow adapter for $9.95 (see below).  With the BNC elbow adapter the minimum recommended antenna cable length for mounting the antenna on top of a Colibri is 8 inches (20.3 cm).  Without the optional elbow adapter 10 inches (25.4 cm) is the minimum recommended antenna cable length for use with Colibri.

BNC-RA BNC Elbow
The BNC elbow can be used with some GPS and Radio antenna cables to reduce the amount of cable space required at the point the antenna connects to the device.  It is very nice for use on the bottom of the Colibri because it allows the use of a very short antenna cable.

GPS35 Garmin GPS35-HVS TracPak - No Longer Available
This is a great, simple GPS for soaring applications.  I like it because it can be powered with 12 VDC and does not have a magnet built into it (like many small GPS units do).  It is not WAAS compatible but the increase in accuracy available from WAAS compatible GPS units is not a big advantage for soaring pilots.

It works very nicely with the ILEC SN-10b because the SN-10b can power the GPS35.  When ordered with an SN-10b can have the GPS35 connected to the ILEC panel cable for $39.

The GPS35-HVS comes with a cable with bare leads.  It can be ordered with an optional DB-9f connector for use with a Pocket PC.  The DB-9f connector plugs directly into a Goddard PS-5a power converter.  The PS-5a provides 12V power for the GPS35 and 5V power for the Pocket PC.

Connector Options

  • No Connector, the customer must connect the +12 VDC power, common and transmit lines. (standard)
  • DB-9f, a standard connector for use with a Goddard PS-5a power converter and a Pocket PC. $19.95
  • ILEC SN-10b panel cable, The customer's ILEC SN-10b panel cable is modified to connect the GPS35 to the SN-10b.  The SN-10b provides 12V power for the GPS. (see photos below). $39
  • SN10b-Pnl-PS5a-GPS35-x cable, This cable is used to connect the GPS35-HVS to both an SN-10b and a Pocket PC.  It replaces the SN-10 Panel Cable that comes with the SN-10. $79

The Garmin® GPS 35 TracPak is a complete GPS receiver and embedded antenna designed for a broad spectrum of OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturers) system applications. Based on the proven technology found in other Garmin 12–channel GPS receivers, the GPS 35 will track up to twelve satellites at a time while providing one-second navigation updates and low power consumption. Its far-reaching capability meets the sensitivity requirements of land navigation as well as the dynamics requirements of high-performance aircraft.

The GPS 35 TracPak design utilizes the latest technology and high-level circuit integration to achieve superior performance while minimizing space and power requirements. Utilizing Garmin's own proprietary chipset, all critical components of the system including the RF/IF receiver hardware and the digital baseband are designed and manufactured by Garmin to ensure outstanding quality and capability.

The GPS 35 TracPak is housed in a black, water-resistant case and designed to withstand rugged operating conditions. While the GPS 35 TracPak is designed as a "plug 'n play" GPS solution, the minimum system must provide a source of power and a clear view of the GPS satellites. The system may communicate with the GPS 35 via two RS-232 compatible bi-directional communication channels. Internal memory backup allows the GPS 35 to retain critical data such as satellite orbital parameters, last position, date, and time.
