Overview
VDC Electronics, Inc. founded in 1993, is a privately held company
headquartered in Englewood, New Jersey. They specialize in battery
management products designed to improve and extend the life of any/all
type lead-acid based batteries through the use of their proprietary
design techniques and U.S. patented desulphation circuitry.
They are the leading manufacturer of pulse type battery
charger-maintainer-conditioners in the U.S. We are a 100% owned American
company founded by personnel, each with over forty years of battery
charging design, development and manufacturing experience.
Regardless of how or where the battery is used, be it in airplanes,
autos, RVs, farm equipment, motorcycles, boats, personal watercraft,
snowmobiles, emergency generators, etc., significant improvement in both
performance (cranking amps - running time) and longevity can be expected
with the proper use of one or more of their products.
Note: ALL our BatteryMINDers brand products are built to the highest
quality world standards, known as ISO 9002. Our historical failure rate
is less than ½ of 1% = less than 1 unit out of every 200 units shipped.
VDC guarantees all its products unconditionally for one (1) full year*
from date of sale to retail customers. We also offer a 5 year** "no
hassle" warranty covering repair or replacement at the manufacturer's
discretion, should they fail to operate as advertised.
*No exceptions except for physical abuse or electrical "surge" voltage
damage.
** Two (2) year warranty on Solar Panels.
About BatteryMINDers
BatteryMINDers® are the new generation of SMART, pulse type
"computer-on-a-chip" chargers, that safely charge and maintain all size
/ type / brands of batteries including starter, deep cycle and sealed
types including AGM “dry” made by OPTIMA, ODYSSEY, EXIDE, INTERSTATE, et
al. They do all of this without ever overcharging, no matter how long
they are left on charge – days-weeks-or even months. Dubbed the chargers
with "brains," they are the first to fully-automatically reverse the
primary cause of early battery failure known as "sulfation". Sulfated
batteries once considered beyond recovery can now be brought back to
long-term useful condition. Certain models of BatteryMINDers® can more
than double the useful life of new batteries.
What is Sulfation (sul-fay-shun)
and How Does It Affect Batteries?

When batteries are improperly maintained
(over-under charged or left uncharged for extended periods) small
crystals of sulfuric acid from the battery’s electrolyte (liquid or
paste) form on the battery’s charge plates. They act as a resistor
(barrier) preventing the battery from ever again accepting a full
charge, no matter how long a charging source may be connected. Once this
occurs, the cranking power of the battery is severely reduced, as well
as its life. Aviation batteries are affected the most because they have
been designed for maximum performance in the smallest-lightest case
possible.
VDC Electronics has developed simple, but
highly effective circuitry, able to safely dissolve sulfation, restoring
much, if not all, of the lost power, providing the battery’s cells are
not shorted or structurally damaged. This U.S. Patented approach is
believed to be the most effective method for eliminating even the oldest
hardened sulfate. By generating safe, wide-band, random frequency
electronic pulses, we are able to cover the full range of sulfate
crystals sizes, in the shortest possible time. Depending on the amount
of sulfate and its age, complete de-sulfation can occur within several
days to several weeks. De-sulfation takes place automatically, while the
battery is being bulk or maintenance level charged.
Note: Both BatteryMINDer models (12-V or
24-V) provide “full-time” de-sulfation. We guarantee to safely eliminate
all sulfate from any non-commercial aviation battery meeting the
criteria clearly stated in our Instruction Manuals.
What makes the BatteryMINDer® desulfation
method unique?
Sulfation (sul-fay-shun), the number one cause of early battery
failures, can be safely reversed, using high frequency electronic
pulses. Unlike other pulse type chargers that claim this or similar
sounding features, VDC’s BatteryMINDers® use a range of high
frequencies. This ensures both old and newly formed sulfation will be
safely dissolved in the shortest possible time. Using just one fixed
frequency may remove some, but not all, especially long established –
hardened sulfate crystals.
Our U.S. Patented methods are truly unique.
We “dissolve” the sulfate rather than “destroying” or shaking it loose.
By generating just the needed range of frequencies and avoiding high
voltages, we eliminate potential damage to the batteries storage plates
known as “flaking”. The sulfuric acid, the major ingredient in a sulfate
crystal, can then easily pass into the electrolyte (liquid, gel or
absorbed type). This immediately raises its specific gravity and frees
the storage plates to now accept a fuller charge. It does this in the
shortest possible time, without developing excessive heat. No loss of
electrolyte takes place in this process, thus ensuring sealed batteries,
as well as “wet”, never die due to loss of electrolyte.
Several charger companies claim a battery
will not develop sulfation, if it is always kept fully charged. This is
incorrect. All lead-acid storage batteries will develop sulphate during
their life time. This includes the new sealed “dry” such as Optima,
Odyssey, Exide and Interstate branded AGM-spiral-wound types. Batteries
develop sulfation each time they are used (discharged – recharged). If
they are overcharged or undercharged or left discharged, some for even
just several days, they will rapidly develop sulfate. Even when stored
fully charged, sulfate will form, without a frequently applied
maintenance charge. It must be charged enough to prevent the battery
from dropping below 12.4-Volts* (2.07-volts / cell). Using or storing
batteries in temperatures above 75°F accelerates the rate of
self-discharge and increases sulfation dramatically. In fact, the
discharge rate doubles, as does sulfation, for every 10°F rise above
room temperature.
In summary, if you want your batteries to
deliver the very best performance and have the longest possible life,
they must be kept free of sulphate by desulfating them in the safest,
most effective way. BatteryMINDers’ U.S. Patented** method is this
most effective way and VDC Electronics guarantees it with a 100% Money
Back Guarantee plus a 5 year “no hassle” full warranty.
Here are the questions you should be asking
yourself:
- Do I want my batteries to last as long
as possible (5+ years)?
- Do I want the highest level of
performance during their lifetime?
- Do I want to them to charge as fast as
safely possible?
- Do I want to eliminate or greatly reduce
battery maintenance (adding water, etc.)?
- Do I want to use the lowest amount of
electricity to charge my batteries?
- Do I want to win back the price of the
charger before I need to replace the battery I first bought it for? ***
If you answered yes to any of these
questions, then you need a desulfating charger-maintainer. Remember, we
guarantee their performance with a 100% Money Back Guarantee plus a
five-year “no hassle”, 100% parts and labor or full replacement warranty.
* At room temperature. Applies to 12-Volt or 2 series-connected 6-volt
batteries.
** U.S. Patent No. 6078166
*** Assumes you started with a new battery costing $85 - $150 and lasting at
least twice as long as it would without desulfating it.

Specific batteries.
Note: Most gliders use batteries
which are not "Aviation Specific". The Power-Sonic batteries sold

AGM batteries (and all glider batteries I've seen) work great with
BatteryMINDers.
An Important Question
An Important question you should know the answer to before making a
buying decision:
Why would you or anyone pay up to $150 for any battery charger, when
there are dozens of much less expensive, good quality chargers from
which to choose?
Answer:
- The cost of the average starter or deep
cycle battery is $85, with an average-life of three (3) years (200 full
charge – discharge cycles). Many types, such as sealed AGM, Gel or
spiral-wound “dry” (Optima, Odyssey, Exide, etc.) cost considerably more
($125 - $175 ea.). They also will not reach their full design life of
five or more years, unless they are properly “treated” during their
entire lifetime.
- The Average performance of all battery
types, over their life, diminishes to 50% of original. Measured in
either cranking-amps (starter type battery) or ampere-hours (deep cycle
battery), your battery has “shrunk” when compared to its original
performance and capacity by 50% or more, before it finally dies. The
major reason (believed by many authorities to be 75% -90% of the cause)
for this loss is not just “old age”, but a condition known as
"sulfation”.
Review by Paul Remde of Cumulus Soaring,
Inc.
I think the BatteryMINDers are great products and I recommend them.
However, it is very important to know before you
buy that the BatteryMINDer Plus Model 12117 will not work on your battery if the battery voltage at rest
(not connected to a load such as glider instruments) is less than 10.5 V.
The BatteryMINDer Plus Model 121117's circuitry won't function if the battery voltage is less
than 10.5 V at rest. If you drain a battery to less than 10.5 V then you
will need to charge it with another charger to at least 10.5 V before
connecting it to the BatteryMINDer Plus Model 12117. It does not hurt the battery or
the BatteryMINDer Plus Model 12117 to connect a battery with less than 11 V, but the
BatteryMINDer Plus Model 12117 won't work at all with it. I really don't think the 10.5 V
(at rest) minimum will be a problem for most glider power applications. Your
battery's voltage may sometimes measure less than 10.5 V at the end of the day
when in your glider and being drained by your soaring instruments, but it
will probably indicate a higher voltage when connected only to a voltage
meter. Note: The BatteryMINDer Model 12248
will charge batteries with voltages as low as 3 V. The
paragraph above applies only to the BatteryMINDer Plus Model 12117.
I recommend the
BatteryMINDer Plus Model 12117 for glider batteries up to about 7 AHr
(as long as it will not be drained to below 10.5 volts - see note above) and the
BatteryMINDer Model 12248 for all battery
sizes. Although the
BatteryMINDer Model 12248 is somewhat expensive, it can be used for a wide variety of
batteries at home and at the gliderport. I use mine to charge my
glider batteries, lawnmower battery, car batteries, etc.

battery temperature sensor
Do I need to
use the Temperature Sensor
If you will be charging and maintaining a
battery at room temperature, then it is not
necessary to use the supplied "At the
battery temperature sensor". However,
if you are using the charger outside or in a
garage or hangar, and the battery and

temperatures, then use of the temperature
sensor is highly recommended - to be sure to
get the most out of the charger and battery.
The temperature sensor should be mounted
directly on the temperature terminal - or as
near to it as possible.

BatteryMINDer-SCC005 |
BatteryMINDer® Solar
Charger-Controller-Desulfator 12 Volt with 5 Watt Panel
Model: SCC005Notes by Paul
Remde
The solar panel supplied with this unit is mounted in a rigid case.
It is not designed to be mounted to a glider. It would be perfect
mounted on the top of a glider trailers or next to a hangar.
This unit supplies about 333 mA of current to charge the battery. That is not
very much current. It is great for charging a battery over a week, but
would definitely not fully charge a battery over 24 hours. It is
perfect for keeping 1 or 2 batteries charged and conditioned when away
from the gliderport for much of the time. It's great if you fly
once a week (or less, like most of us) but could not be used to keep
your batteries full at a soaring contest. I therefore recommend
the SCC015 if you want to be able to charge the glider battery quickly.
Alligator Clips Not Included
This product does not include alligator clips for the battery
connection. It includes ring terminals only (see photo at right).
Alligator clips are available as an option below. If you are
connecting directly to a battery you may want to add a quick-disconnect
connector to match the one that connects the battery or to your glider's
electrical system. Or you may want to use

BatteryMINDer® Solar
Charger-Controller-Desulfator 12 Volt with 5 Watt Panel
Model: SCC015Notes by Paul
Remde
The solar panel supplied with this unit is mounted in a rigid case.
It is not designed to be mounted to a glider. It would be perfect
mounted on the top of a glider trailers or next to a hangar.
This unit supplies up to about 1 A of current to charge the battery.
That is pretty good. With good sunlight it should top of most
glider batteries in 8 to 10 hours. It may or may not be enough to
charge the glider battery between back-to-back soaring days - such as at
a soaring contest.
